Unfortunately, any kind of period dance or small town event does not go very well. And this dance is no exception. Essentially, because of Isobel’s (Mia Kirshner) return, Elena (Nina Dobrev) now knows that Klaus is aware of her and is out there. As everybody saw, our hero Alaric is possessed by Klaus and is right in their midst, chaperoning the school dance, which they are all attending thinking it will be their opportunity to take Klaus out, although they have no idea who he is or what he looks like.
We always knew that we wanted to do something to mess with the audience a little bit, to play against their anticipation and their expectation. We wanted to do some kind of bait and switch. It was Kevin’s [Williamson] wonderful idea. He’s very good at coming up with those holy s—t moments, as we call them. We really wanted to find a good, juicy role for Matt Davis to sink his teeth into. He’s been very patient for most of this season. He’s so good we wanted him to have a little bit of that fun that everybody else was getting to have. We also thought it would be really clever of Klaus to infiltrate our heroes through the body of somebody who they trust. He could get the lay of the land and see what’s out there and that’s exactly what he’s going to do.
The emotional repercussion is that Matt (Zach Roerig) is going to find himself struggling with whether he should accept wholeheartedly what Sheriff Forbes says about vampires having no humanity, or if it’s possible that Caroline (Candice Accola) is still the girl that fell in love with him. He might have to impart some of those questions on the Sheriff. It’s going to make her wonder if she should look at her daughter as a monster or as a person.
His mother thinks he’s off on some kind of spiritual journey. He’ll be back for the full moon, which is the last couple episodes of the season – the last day. It all takes place in a 24-hour period, which is the day of and the night of the full moon.
All the couples are about to realize that on the horizon there are difficult times in their relationship, for different reasons. Every relationship will be tested. Choices will be made. Things will change.
The first scene with Joseph Morgan is actually a flashback in our nineteenth episode, the one after this week. We go back and forth. We’ve heard the stories of Klaus but now we’ll actually get to see Klaus as he meets and woos Katerina with the intent of using her in the sacrifice ritual.
I was and I wasn’t. I think, in this information age, all of our fans and critics were able to have access to that kind of information instantly so when you start talking about a character in episode eight, and you don’t reveal them until episode nineteen, you have a lot of time to speculate. I think people were having a really good time thinking who should it be? What does he look like? Oh my God, he’s on Twitter.
