Last week’s episode of “The Vampire Diaries” ended with a true cliffhanger: Alaric (Matt Davis), mild mannered history teacher and vampire hunter, was possessed by Klaus, the world’s oldest and most powerful vampire. Fans, who have known for weeks that Joseph Morgan will make his debut as Klaus in the April 21st episode, were shocked. This week, Mystic Falls High, having learned nothing from its disastrous 1950s dance last season, is having a 1960s dance. The chaperone: Klaus in Alaric’s body. Executive Producer Julie Plec previews what could be the bloodiest school event since “Carrie,” explains what inspired this diabolical twist and offers a few hints about the first time viewers will see Klaus’s face.
Mystic High’s school activities tend to be dangerous…
Unfortunately, any kind of period dance or small town event does not go very well. And this dance is no exception. Essentially, because of Isobel’s (Mia Kirshner) return, Elena (Nina Dobrev) now knows that Klaus is aware of her and is out there. As everybody saw, our hero Alaric is possessed by Klaus and is right in their midst, chaperoning the school dance, which they are all attending thinking it will be their opportunity to take Klaus out, although they have no idea who he is or what he looks like.

How did you come up with the idea of throwing a curve ball and bringing in Klaus via Alaric a couple weeks before Joseph Morgan’s debut in the role?
We always knew that we wanted to do something to mess with the audience a little bit, to play against their anticipation and their expectation. We wanted to do some kind of bait and switch. It was Kevin’s [Williamson] wonderful idea. He’s very good at coming up with those holy s—t moments, as we call them. We really wanted to find a good, juicy role for Matt Davis to sink his teeth into. He’s been very patient for most of this season. He’s so good we wanted him to have a little bit of that fun that everybody else was getting to have. We also thought it would be really clever of Klaus to infiltrate our heroes through the body of somebody who they trust. He could get the lay of the land and see what’s out there and that’s exactly what he’s going to do.

What are the repercussions of Matt and Carolyn’s mother, Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre), finding out that Caroline is a vampire?
The emotional repercussion is that Matt (Zach Roerig) is going to find himself struggling with whether he should accept wholeheartedly what Sheriff Forbes says about vampires having no humanity, or if it’s possible that Caroline (Candice Accola) is still the girl that fell in love with him. He might have to impart some of those questions on the Sheriff. It’s going to make her wonder if she should look at her daughter as a monster or as a person.

When will Tyler return? Where does his mother think he is?
His mother thinks he’s off on some kind of spiritual journey. He’ll be back for the full moon, which is the last couple episodes of the season – the last day. It all takes place in a 24-hour period, which is the day of and the night of the full moon.

Every “Vampire Diaries” fan has his or her favorite couple. What can you tell me about the couples in Mystic Falls?
All the couples are about to realize that on the horizon there are difficult times in their relationship, for different reasons. Every relationship will be tested. Choices will be made. Things will change.

When will viewers first see Joseph Morgan as Klaus?
The first scene with Joseph Morgan is actually a flashback in our nineteenth episode, the one after this week. We go back and forth. We’ve heard the stories of Klaus but now we’ll actually get to see Klaus as he meets and woos Katerina with the intent of using her in the sacrifice ritual.

Were you surprised by how much interest there was in the casting of Klaus?
I was and I wasn’t. I think, in this information age, all of our fans and critics were able to have access to that kind of information instantly so when you start talking about a character in episode eight, and you don’t reveal them until episode nineteen, you have a lot of time to speculate. I think people were having a really good time thinking who should it be? What does he look like? Oh my God, he’s on Twitter.
