TVLINE | Will Andie’s death have any effect on Damon?
She was fun and beautiful and smart. He actually liked Andie a lot, regardless of the fact that he compelled her to do and say what he wanted her to do. She still had a mind of her own, which is awesome. So he’s upset, but really what Andie’s death is about is telegraphing to Damon the actual lengths to which Stefan will go. That surprises the hell out of Damon. It’s a setback for him. It’s quite the annoyance.

TVLINE | Elena is still hell-bent on going after Stefan. Where does that leave Damon?
Elena’s a very strong-willed young individual. Elena’s going to do whatever Elena wants to do. She’s very persuasive, and I mean that in the most positive of senses. He’s going to try and help her in any way he can. He truly wants to be able to help her. He wants her to be happy. There’s nothing Damon won’t do for Elena’s happiness.

TVLINE | Having seen how dark Stefan can get, does that make Elena see Damon differently?
It doesn’t hurt Damon. It has the ability to make Elena and Damon bond, and it allows Damon to have to really protect her, even from his own brother. So yes, it has to have a profound effect on the way she perceives Damon. Absolutely. It makes her more connected to him by the virtue of the fact that he’s actually become a sounding board. He’s very well-versed on this type of behavior. He has the ability to help her understand what’s going on. That comes in handy in a very big way.

TVLINE | They didn’t really address the kiss in the premiere. Does he even remember it?
No, he remembers. You find out later he remembers. What’s funny is that some were saying, “How was this passionate kiss?” and I was thinking, “I don’t know if anyone noticed, but Damon was pale and sweaty and coughing up blood.”

TVLINE | It wasn’t the sexiest of situations.
Exactly! It wasn’t the sexiest of situations. I wouldn’t say it came from a place of passion. I would say it probably came from a place more of compassion.

TVLINE | Is there a part of Damon that feels like he’s being strung along by Elena?
I don’t think so at all. Elena’s intentions are nothing but pure. Elena’s intentions have nothing to do with Damon, really. She cares about Damon, but she’s not playing him in any way, shape or form. I can’t speak directly for [executive producers] Kevin [Williamson] and Julie [Plec], but that’s not Elena’s nature.

TVLINE | What’s coming up for Damon and Alaric?
The bromance has some twists and turns. At the end of the day, Alaric is Damon’s bro. It’s gotta be difficult dealing with Damon.

TVLINE | I hear he’s not too keen on the fact that Damon and Elena are growing so close.
He’s not too keen because he’s a smart man, and he feels a responsibility to protect her. He feels a responsibility to make sure she OK, and Damon doesn’t even pretend to make the best decisions in his life. He just does it. Alaric having that trepidation and concern for Elena’s well-being is very, very well-justified. I couldn’t argue with Ric, but Damon could until the cows come home.

TVLINE | How will Damon be letting out some of his frustration?
Damon’s way of letting out frustration and excess energy is not that different than anybody’s. [But] what’s different about it is that his is quite destructive at times, and it leads to someone getting hurt. Because of that, Elena won’t stand for it. She wants nothing to do with it. So that makes it difficult for him. He’s frustrated to no end on many levels, and now he can’t even go out and get his frustration out or express himself the way he’s used to. The blood is what makes it easier to cope with. So, it’s a tough time for Mr. Damon.
