Ian Somerhalder is to follow in the footsteps of Sir Paul McCartney and Hayden Panettiere by receiving the Humane Society of the United States' Wyler Award.
The 33-year-old star, who plays vampire Damon Salvatore in hit series The Vampire Diaries, will be honoured for his campaigning and for setting up the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which raises awareness of animal welfare issues.
"The tireless efforts of The Humane Society of the United States to protect animals around the world has always been an inspiration to me and I'm honoured to be recognised with this year's Wyler Award," he said.
Ian joins previous winners Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Kristin Davis, Sir Paul and Hayden.
Beverly Kaskey, executive producer of the annual Genesis Awards, said: "From addressing Congress to making TV appearances to regularly blogging to informing his million-plus followers on Twitter, Ian is a major voice and force for animals and a most deserving recipient of The Wyler Award."
The Genesis Awards, now in their 26th year, will take place at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on March 24.
